5 Common Challenges in Nutraceutical and Cosmetic Warehouses
In the nutraceutical and cosmetics industries, a resilient supply chain is critical to success and consistently meeting customer needs. Due to the growing global demand for these products, it’s vital for businesses to identify barriers to supply chain and warehousing success and develop solutions to overcome them.
Whether you operate a dedicated cosmetic warehouse or a nutraceutical distribution center, understanding the top challenges this industry faces can help you develop better operational procedures for improved speed and efficiency.
Below are five of the top nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing challenges businesses face today.
1. Changing Packaging Demands
As nutraceutical and cosmetics markets continue to grow in popularity, new consumer demands arise, calling for product manufacturers to evolve in response. One of the ways this market segment is changing is in the need for new and innovative packaging solutions.
Some of the packaging demand changes that nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouses need to consider include:
- Increased preference for glass bottles
- Growing demand for reusable packaging
- More offerings of subscription nutraceutical products with refillable packaging
- Increased demand for packaging transparency, including non-toxic materials and processes
To remain competitive, it’s important for nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouse operations to develop packaging and product handling strategies that respond to these needs.
2. Inventory Excess and Inaccuracies
Several inventory-control and supply chain issues cause nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing challenges. One of the leading inventory issues that can impact a dedicated nutraceutical warehouse is overstocking with an excess of unmoved inventory. Overstocking nutraceuticals leads to the risk of letting inventory expire, causing significant financial losses.
Likewise, in cosmetic warehousing, excessive inventory also creates workflow problems, including storage and space issues. When cosmetic warehouses are faced with an excess of inventory, it makes it difficult to keep the facility organized. Poorly organized warehouses are at an increased risk of inventory mismanagement, including inaccurate inventory counts and picking errors.

3. Global Demand Changes
Nearly every industry has been impacted by global demand changes. From a lack of product availability to skilled labor shortages, there are many issues impacting the supply chain around the world. Compounding many of these challenges, a significant shift in consumer demand has required warehouses to adapt in response.
Nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouses are facing these challenges, as well. These global demand changes are making it more challenging to get raw materials for production and impacting basic warehouse operations, including quality control and packaging. These global challenges have also impacted nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouse logistics, requiring innovative transportation and delivery solutions to keep up with demand.
4. Unnecessary Operations
In the nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing business, safety and hygiene must be balanced with speed and efficiency to process and ship products quickly enough to meet consumer demand. Since nutraceuticals and cosmetics are products for everyday use, consumers expect accurate and fast delivery.
To meet customer expectations, nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouses need to streamline their operations. By eliminating unnecessary procedures, production managers can help boost productivity in the warehouse. Converting to automated or more efficient inventory management and material handling practices can help increase overall operational efficiencies and improve order accuracy.
5. Gaps in the Supply Chain
The nutraceutical and cosmetics industries are typically dependent on unique ingredients and a specific supply of materials from particular locations or suppliers. When supply chain or production issues impact the ability to steadily source these ingredients, it can cause significant gaps in the supply chain, including processing, production and shipping.
Other gaps in the supply chain may involve delivery and logistics. Unpredictable issues, such as inclement weather, global conflicts, economic downturns or infrastructure issues, can cause supply chain constraints that impact nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing and distribution.
How to Improve Nutraceutical and Cosmetic Warehouse Design Efficiency
Effective warehouse design is essential to nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouse management. A well-designed warehouse helps maintain consistent workflow and improve productivity.
You can maximize different aspects of warehouse design to improve operational efficiencies. Whether it’s upgrading equipment, maximizing the use of warehouse space or improving inventory management, production managers can find effective ways to optimize work efficiencies.
Below are tips on how to improve cosmetic warehouse efficiency.
Update Outdated or Complex Equipment
To run an effective and successful nutraceutical or cosmetics warehouse, production managers need high-quality tools and equipment that will speed up processes and improve overall quality. Optimizing warehouse equipment improves the overall warehouse design, from physical use of space to overall operational procedures. Outdated equipment can disrupt warehouse workflow and decrease productivity, and older equipment is more likely to break down, causing costly work stoppages.
Overly complex equipment can also impact the bottom line. It may take longer to learn to operate, impacting productivity. By investing in newer equipment that’s designed to solve unique warehouse challenges, production managers can improve their overall operational design.
Optimize Warehouse Layout
An optimal warehouse layout is essential to improving operational efficiencies. With a proper warehouse layout, you can achieve a more streamlined workflow, including more accurate order fulfillment with faster picking rates.

Below are some of the top nutraceutical and cosmetic warehouse design tips to help optimize your current layout:
- Use vertical space-saving solutions to maximize floor space
- Establish workflow zones that minimize travel throughout the warehouse
- Invest in the right equipment that can help save space and increase efficiency
- Implement continuous improvement procedures to monitor and assess productivity
Developing a better warehouse layout helps streamline workflow and helps facilities process and ship more orders in less time. Maximizing operational efficiencies through better warehouse layout design can help your business exceed customer expectations in this competitive market.
Consider a Vendor Managed Inventory System
Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) systems can help alleviate the responsibilities of inventory management. Since one of the leading nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing challenges is carrying excessive levels of inventory, a VMI strategy can directly address this issue by preventing over-carrying stock. With a VMI strategy, the vendor is charged with inventory management. This helps moderate inventory levels, typically based on a strategic approach that follows consumer demand.
By leveraging a VMI strategy, warehouses can reduce the risk of overstocking while streamlining their own operations. It provides greater flexibility so warehouses can only acquire inventory that has a higher chance of selling. It also helps to consolidate warehouse space and reduce overhead costs.
Optimize Transportation Logistics
To effectively manage a nutraceutical or cosmetics warehouse, production managers need to be able to work with supply chain partners to intelligently control the flow of goods in and out of the warehouse. If inbound or outbound logistics are delayed or disrupted, it can create significant inventory processing bottlenecks in the warehouse, causing space constraints and a loss in productivity.
By optimizing transportation logistics, including freight and delivery systems, supply chain managers can better prevent and manage inventory backlogs. Building excellent communication with supply chain partners and leveraging transportation management systems can help maintain a manageable flow of inventory.
How to Increase Nutraceutical and Cosmetic Warehouse Safety
When developing nutraceutical and cosmetic warehousing solutions, it’s critical to factor in safety procedures. Warehouses are busy and dynamic environments, naturally creating hazards that put workers at risk of injuries. Some of the most common warehouse safety concerns involve injuries due to repetitive movements, along with accidents caused by misusing equipment and mishandling inventory.
Implementing warehouse safety protocols is critical to ensuring worker well-being and maintaining consistent productivity. From employee training to safe inventory management and handling to proper safety communication and signage, there are many steps managers can take to improve cosmetic and nutraceutical warehouse safety.
Create or Optimize Your Warehouse Management System
One of the best cosmetic warehouse solutions for increased safety is developing an overall management system. A cosmetic warehouse management system involves defining all warehouse activities and procedures, including the required safety considerations at every stage of operational workflow. Warehouse management systems help managers identify key areas of improvement so workers can better manage inventory, leading to less handling time and a reduced risk of incidents.
Warehouse management systems give teams insight into the most frequently moved and handled products. Based on this information, managers can design a more effective layout whereby these higher volume goods are positioned in more accessible locations, increasing handling safety.
Mark Hazardous Areas
Warehouse safety markings and signage are critical aspects of optimal warehouse layout and help to reduce and prevent workplace injuries. To improve cosmetic and nutraceutical warehouse safety, it’s important to invest in professional hazard markings and signage to remind workers of the potential risks involved in their daily work. Hazard signage and markings are ways to remain in constant communication with employees so safety stays top of mind.
In addition to reducing workplace incidents, safety signage and markings can also improve productivity. By marking hazardous areas, workers are more likely to take safety performance seriously, translating to increased focus and productivity on the task at hand.

Testimonials
Still not sure about the way material handling equipment and improved warehouse design systems can address the challenges those in the nutraceutical industry are facing? At Cherry’s, we’ve assisted many nutraceutical companies looking to improve their material handling equipment and processes.
The following is a customer testimonial concerning Cherry’s clients that illustrate how nutraceutical industry material handling experts can help your company face challenges unique to your company:
The Challenge
Pallet Inverter Equipment was damaged due to structural integrity issues.
Cherry’s Industrial sold three pallet inverters to a well-known nutraceutical company. A couple of years later and after extensive use, that same company called to report that there were structural integrity issues with each of the machines. Cherry’s CEO and Technician made a personal visit to their facility to inspect the pallet inverters. To their dismay, there were structural breaks and cracks in the metal of each of the machines. It was a challenging thing to witness since Cherry’s equipment is “built to last.” How could this be possible, knowing that the metal construction was designed to handle thousands of loads for many years? The CEO of Cherry’s requested a demonstration to witness a load being placed into the inverter to further understand how the machine was being used. Sure enough, the discovery was made. The forklift driver transported a large, oversized load and rammed it into the machine. The opening of the jaw of the machine was barely large enough for the load to fit. The mystery was no longer a mystery. The contact from the nutrition company could not believe what he was witnessing. After further investigation, it was discovered that their purchasing department changed the way the loads would come into their facility to maximize their transportation costs. The loads would now be taller, which meant that the original clamping range of the machines was not large enough to comfortably accommodate the loads. Not only did this mean the machines would be damaged, but also their product.
The Result
Cherry’s Industrial went the extra mile to help this company by refurbishing all three of their Pallet Inverters to increase their clamping range, make the baskets 4 inches deeper, and also include stop blocks on the loading platforms to prevent the loads from hitting the back wall. At the time of the writing of this article, 2 refurbished units have been installed and the company is very happy to report that the pallet inverters are functioning very well. The forklift drivers can do their jobs faster without damaging either the machine or the company product. Cherry’s Industrial came through for this customer and fulfilled four of its primary core values – Build Relationships, Take Ownership, Do the Right Thing Always, and Exceed Customer Expectations.
Our Solution
Refurbished Pallet Inverter with the same quality of structural integrity but with a larger clamping range.
