SUCCESS STORY: MOBILE DRUM DUMPER
Nestle is one of the largest food manufacturers in the world. For their Willy Wonka brand to produce the variety of candy they distribute at such a large scale, they must utilize specialized material handling equipment. The dumpers they were using on their panning line were roughly 10-years old and in desperate need of an update. Unfortunately, the manufacturer that they had initially purchased them from no longer made them.
They reached out to us at Cherry’s Industrial Equipment to see if we could provide them with a new stainless steel drum dumper that could fit their needs. We had previously helped the Itasca Nestle – Willy Wonka facility with multiple Pallet Inverter projects, so they were familiar with our work ethic and tenacity. Upon further research, the custom machine they desired had similar functionality to our own 90° tippers. So, with the help of our amazing engineers, producing a custom drum dumper for Nestle – Willy Wonka would only be a matter of confirming their needs, expectations, application dimensions and electrical & material global specifications.

Delivering a Nestle – Willy Wonka Drum Dumper
The Itasca plant had a very specific place they needed these dumpers. Inside the room where the candy was mixed were long aisles with windows for the candy, coloring, and flavoring to be dumped through to large mixing tumblers. The contents of the barrel had to be pushed into the room, tipped, dumped through the space of the window, and then wheeled out again.
The dumper needed to tip 135 degrees to be able to empty its contents through the window and into the tumbler. Our line of tippers has a similar function at its core, so it seemed natural to integrate the same ideas into the dumper. The only difference is the angle of the tip, respectively 90 degrees versus 135. Changing the placement of the cylinder made it possible for the dumper to do it’s job. The only things we had to figure out was a way to make the basket suitable for barrels, make it completely mobile and also to keep it stable enough on wheels for it to complete its task safely.
We specifically developed our line of Mobile Drum Dumper for this job, and for customers that faced similar problems within the same industry. Cherry’s Industrial provided a solution that met the very particular characteristics of the original product, while still offering the superior quality and design we are known for. The custom LDT Drum Dumper we developed is built for smooth and reliable performance. It features push button controls and limit switches, a 304 stainless steel chute, Hydac All-in-One Power Unit, counterbalance and pressure relief valves. It also has a 120V single phase motor so it can be plugged into the wall for easy access.
They also requested additional enhancements to the Drum Dumper, such as including stainless steel casters, handles and dual heavy duty floor locks for improved safety and maneuverability. A marine 2-part epoxy coated frame and legs also offer increased resistance to moisture and chemicals, increasing the lifespan of the dumper.
From initial contact and sales consultation to site visits, factory acceptance testing, delivery and implementation, Cherry’s Industrial stayed in close communication with Nestle –Willy Wonka. We successfully fulfilled their requests, staying within the projected timeline

The stainless steel drum bumper designed for this project was implemented successfully at the Itasca, IL factory. The client has also expressed interest in purchasing two to three more units in 2019.
